Perhaps like you, I was a product junkie for many years, slathering my skin with various cosmetics, sunscreens, lotions, and perfumes. What I didn't know was that all those products were filled with potentially dangerous chemicals that were being absorbed into my blood stream, day after day. Becoming a mother increased my awareness about what I was putting on my babies' skin, but I didn't advocate it for my own health.
After I became a Certified Holistic Health Consultant and Nutritionist, I realized that what we put ON our body is just as important as what we put IN our body. Our skin is our largest organ and highly absorptive, and the products that we use daily affect our health. And while the U.S. government regulates many things, the chemicals permissible in personal care products are NOT. The FDA allows the cosmetic and personal care industries to include known carcinogens (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates), in their products without disclosing it to consumers. WHAT?!? Numerous studies report that major health issues (cancer, reproductive issues, endocrine disruption, autism, ADHD, etc.) are on the rise. We overwhelm our bodies with toxins on a daily basis: the food we eat, the air we breathe, the products we use... the list continues!
I advocate to my clients, family, and friends to eat organic, local produce and to drink the cleanest water available. Often times, cleaning up personal care products seems to be the last issue for many people to address. I'm excited to say that I've found a company that is working hard to provide the public with safer products and lobbying for stricter industry standards at Capitol Hill.
A few facts about the industry presently...
Some of those statistics are pretty shocking! I'm sure you have some idea how much our world has changed since 1938 and how much more we know about human health. Why have the standards in our personal care products not kept up? Why does the European Union believe that 1300 chemicals in cosmetics are dangerous, but the United States only believes ELEVEN are? And heavy metals in our lipstick? You better believe that my daughter isn't playing dress-up with my old lip gloss!
Thankfully, there's a safer alternative.
I've partnered with BEAUTYCOUNTER because
I believe we ALL deserve better.
Beautycounter has banned more than 1,500 ingredients in the creation of their products, as well as making sure their products perform to the highest standards. One of the main reasons that I support Beautycounter and their mission is that they're working towards changing the standards in the beauty industry. Beautycounter is working at the legislative level in Washington D.C. to reform industry laws, hoping other personal care companies will follow suit. They also support a few non-profit organizations that are advocating the reduction of human chemical exposure. Watch this 3-minute video to learn more about why I am so proud to stand with this company.
Beautycounter is passionate about creating products that perform as well as products that are safe. Over the past few years, I have tried countless non-toxic skin care and cosmetic lines, and a combination of safe, natural ingredients, and product efficacy is something rare! Honestly, my skin has never looked better since using Beautycounter's products.
All Beautycounter products are rated between 0-2 on EWG’s Skindeep database, which has become my favorite resource for researching cosmetic product safety. (Use this link to compare the products you're using currently to see how they stack up!)
